Common questions we get asked about coaching.
What are the 3 coaching styles?
There are three basic types of coaching styles autocratic, democratic, and holistic.
Autocratic coaching is an all-or-nothing style of coaching. The coach has full control over the decisions being made for the team and athletes with little to no input from the athletes.
This style is best suited for team sports and skill-based training. It should not be used
without some autonomy from the players to help instill a feeling of ownership over their
training.
Democratic coaching is when coaches seek input from athletes and make a decision
together. Democratic coaches allow their athletes a large amount of autonomy over their development. This style is best suited to individual sports like track and cross country.
Holistic coaching is when there is no solid structure in training. Holistic coaches create a happy environment that allows athletes to build and explore their own skill-based training.
This style is not well suited to youth athletes and works best with a mature team.
What skills are needed for coaching?
One of the most important skills for athletic coaches is communication. Other important
skills include discipline, listening, leadership, passion, motivation, sports-based knowledge,
learning, and emotional intelligence or the ability to read and understand individual players.
Are there any certifications for athletic coaches?
There are hundreds of different training certificates available for athletic coaches in the US. A coach is not required to get a certificate to train. A coach is required to have current CPR training.
Coaches that wish to train in the public school system are required to complete the National Coach Certification Program (NCCP).
Coaches that wish to coach at the university level must have extensive training in the sport they wish to coach. It is also often requested that a degree in sports or sports medicine is obtained.
Each state will have a different requirement and coaches should contact their local schools and sports programs to get a better idea of what specific certification is required to coach in that area or city.
There is currently no universal coaching certification in the United States.
